I travel frequently between Brighton & CERN. When in Brighton my housemates are 4 other students from very different subjects. My favourite food is anything I can whip up quickly & easily. I watch every Wales 🏴 rugby 🏉 & football ⚽ game. I play for Brighton Cougars 🐆 basketball 🏀 team. My preferred pronouns are he/him.

I use data from a detector longer than 3 school buses, taller than 5 giraffes and almost as heavy as the Eiffel Tower (a tiny fraction of which is in the background of this picture!). This detector takes millions of pictures every second of what comes out when we smash really high energy particles together.

My Typical Day:
Teaching, lab tours, food with friends, present my work

…are just some of the things I do in a typical day! In the morning I might lead a Q&A session about particle physics with university students. Just before lunchtime I might give some school students a tour of our lab. Every lunchtime is spent having food with friends (this one isn’t a “might”). In the afternoon I might present my work in video calls to people from all over the world!

What I'd do with the prize money:
Bring CERN scientists to schools, and bring schools to CERN
-
The most exciting thing that's happened this year in my research area:
Observation of Higgs bosons being produced at the same time as top quarks, a very rare process.
-
My latest work:
I prepare CERN data to release openly for use in education with students of about 16 and older. All goes on http://opendata.atlas.cern
-
My favourite misconception about my area of science:
Most of the time, particle physicists don’t need to work underground, they can do their work anywhere in the world with a good internet connection! Therefore, going underground is a photo opportunity!
