I grew up in Hampshire, went to uni in London and now live by the River Thames in Reading.
I can play the piano, clarinet, bass guitar, ukulele and Chinese lute but I must admit I’m pretty rusty!
I have friends and family across the world who I like to visit, but too of my bucket list is New Zealand. One day hopefully!

I have worked for a few different organisations in the UK nuclear industry, looking at nuclear waste storage and how to run a fusion reactor. I work out thed radioactive doses that people could get, but also the other hazards at these facilities including electrical, fire and chemotoxic.
-
My Typical Day:
I drive to the office at the fusion reactor near Culham where I meet with scientists and engineers.
-
What I'd do with the prize money:
Honestly, I haven’t entirely worked that out but I would like it to go towards Didcot Girls’ School (Science Department), who I have been visiting for the past 6 years to run sessions on radioactivity, or Science Oxford who help facilitate STEM outreach in my local region.
-
The most exciting thing that's happened this year in my research area:
It hasn’t happened yet, but we are supposed to start a new experimental campaign at the Joint European Torus (JET) which will provide invaluable data for the journey towards commercial fusion power.
-
My latest work:
I am working on the JET safety case for operating with tritium. Tritium is a tricky material to manage because it is very mobile and is rather dosey!
-
My favourite misconception about my area of science:
That my job is the same as Homer Simpson’s
